Lord Dattatreya
Hindu Mythology represents Dattatraya as a Being with three faces, one of God Bramha, the other of God Vishnu and the third of Divine Shiva. The three heads represent the power of creation, preservation and destruction, which are present in the universe emanating from one and the same Reality, although each function is designated differently.
The trinity (trimurti) arising from a unity indicates the synthetic vision of the unity of things which has given life to Indian Philosophy down the ages. The four dogs at the feet of Lord Dattatraya represent the four Vedas as hounds of heaven and watch-dogs of truth, owned by Dattatray, the great Hunter for the souls of men. The ochre colored garb of Dattatraya symbolizes sanyasa, the spirit of renunciation or detachment without which realization of ultimate truth would only be a half-hearted effort.
Dattatraya the teacher and the Deity , I meditate on Him, the Lord, the ever-holy Lord , His hymn and his song too Do I expound by his irresistible glance ?
Dattatraya is a teacher of Gods and of the antigods. He protects men from evil influences. He is worshipped by many sages and taught the Vedanta doctrine of self-realization. He is a person of gentle, peaceful and loving character. His Jayanti (Birthday) is celebrated on the full-moon in the month of Margasirsha (December).
